Evansville Home Talent Baseball opened its Inaugural Season against Stoughton on May 1, 2005 at the Evansville High School field. It was also Opening Day for 42 other teams around south-central Wisconsin in the 77th season of the Home Talent Baseball League.

It was an exciting day for the players as most of them had been physically preparing for this day since March. It was just as exciting for the community because Home Talent baseball is now back in Evansville. The last year Evansville had a team was 1981. To help add to the entertainment value of the game the concession stand was open as well as a local DJ introduced the starting line-ups and played music between innings.

The game time temperature was a gusty 42 F with about 20-30 fans braving the elements. Starting picture for Evansville was Nic Larson who struck out the first two batters of the game. He ended up with 8 strike outs in the game. Both teams failed to produce any runs in the first inning; however, Stoughton shook off the cold in a hurry, and their bats heated up fast by scoring 3 runs in the top half of the 2nd inning. Stoughton scored at least one run in every inning until the top of the ninth. Evansville didn't have answer for Stoughton's hitting and strong defensive play.

Evansville did score two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jerod Stiendl and Ben Kraus lead off the inning with a walk each and a wild pitch advanced the two runners to third and second. Stiendl scored by Evan Baumberger's ground out to second. The last run came when Nic Larson hit the ball to the third baseman and Kraus was caught in a run down, but scored when the catcher misplayed the ball at the plate. Evansville had other opportunities to score. The bases were loaded in the fifth and seventh innings, but Evansville batters were unable to get a run across.

In summary, it was a lot of effort by the team to get to this point, and the day was successful win or lose. Each week the team will work to improve their skills to be competitive in the Home Talent League.

The Evansville Home Talent Team would like to recognize the community businesses that sponsored the team to provide financial support to cover many of the franchise start-up costs. The sponsors were recognized at the game and are listed on the team's website at www.evansville.hometalent.org.

Evansville's next two games are on the road. Thursday, May 5 at Cottage Grove starting at 7:00 pm and Sunday, May 8 at Oregon starting at 1:00 pm. For the latest schedule and results please visit the team's website.
