EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT BASEBALL TEAM WINS
The Jays pitching dominate over playoff contending Stoughton

On Sunday, the Evansville Home Talent Team beat Stoughton 3-2 in a Southeast Section Home Talent League game. With the win Evansville's record is now 2-11 and Stoughton's record is 6-7. Stoughton is battling for the second playoff spot behind Orfordville, in the West Division of the section.

With temps in the mid-90s at game time, Evansville's pitching heated up by striking out 14 Stoughton batters in the game. Starter Nic Larson led the team with 7 strikeouts in 5 innings. Tim Legler came in to relieve Larson in the sixth inning and ended up with 5 strikeouts. Wade Janes pitched in the bottom of the ninth for the save and struck out 2 of the 3 batters he faced.

Evansville scored first in the top of the second inning when Jason Schultz reached base on an error. Schultz was followed by a base hit by Brent Cashore. Schultz reached third on another Stoughton error. Nick Manion batted in Schultz with a sacrifice fly to center.

Schultz, Cashore and Manion again led the attack for Evansville in the fourth inning to score twice. Schultz started the inning with a walk; followed by a base hit by Cashore. Manion's sacrifice bunt, which was a pop fly over the charging first baseman's head, moved the runners to second and third. After getting Manion out at first, Stoughton threw the ball to third in an attempt to tag out Schultz, but over threw the base to score Schultz. Cashore scored on Nic Larson's ground ball to the second baseman.

A key defensive play by Evansville was in the bottom of the first when Stoughton's first two batters each hit a single. The third batter hit into a 4-6-3 double play (second baseman to shortstop to first baseman) and the fourth batter popped out to the pitcher for the third out. Despite the two led off hits in the inning, Stoughton did not score.

Another key defensive play by Evansville (picture below) was in the bottom of the fifth when Stoughton hit a lead off double. The next batter struck out. The third batter in the inning hit a ball sharply to Evansville's third baseman, Brent Cashore, who threw to second to get the lead runner in a run down for the second out. The inning ended on a ground out to third. With a runner on second and no outs, Evansville prevented Stoughton from scoring.

On July 14th Evansville ended the Thursday Night League by losing to Pine Bluff 6-5. Evansville managed to tie the game in the top of the seventh inning with two outs when Jon Frey struck out, but managed to reach first base safely on a past ball. After a stolen base, Frey scored on Jason Schultz's clutch hit to tie the game. Pine Bluff scored the game winning run in the bottom of the 7th inning. Evansville finishes the Thursday Night League with a record of 2 wins and 7 losses for the 2005 Inaugural Season.
