EVANSVILLE JAYS RECORD FIRST
LOSS OF THE 2006 SEASON
On Sunday, May 28th the Evansville Jays hosted the Albion Tigers
in the Home Talent Baseball League game. Coming into the game the
Jays were in first place of the Southeast Section at 3-0, and the
Tigers were in second with a 2-1 record.
Evansville scored first in the bottom of the third inning with
two outs Casey Nelson hit a single and was followed by a double
by Jerod Steindl. With runners on third and second base a clutch
2-RBI base hit single by Tim Legler scored both runners. Evansville
leads 2-0.
Albion tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a couple
of hits and an error by Evansville. Then in the top of the seventh
inning Albion scored four runs on 4 hits. It was a tough inning
for the Jays defense, committing 3 errors in the inning. Score Evansville
2, Albion 6.
In the bottom half of the seventh inning Evansville bounced back
in a hurry. Brookes Baumberger and Jeremy Rasmussen each lead off
the inning with a walk. Next batter, Nick Manion hit a single to
score Baumberger. The key hit in the inning was when Brent Cashore
ripped a 2-RBI double down the first base line to score Rasmussen
and Manion. Next batter, Jon Frey took a couple of pitches, and
Cashore was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. Frey was able
to score Cashore with a ground out to the shortstop. Score Evansville
6, Albion 6.
Albion was able to score in the top of the ninth on 1 hit, 1 error
and two walks. Their lead off batter reached on an error, which
eventually scored on a bases loaded walk. Score Evansville 6, Albion
7.
Evansville's bottom half of the ninth inning was filled with a
roller coaster of emotions. With one out Frey hit a base hit. Next
batter Casey Nelson hit a deep shot to center field. When the ball
was hit it looked as if it was going to be a home run to win or
at least a double to tie the game, but Albion's center fielder made
a great catch at the top of the fence to record the second out.
When the catch was made Frey was just rounding second base. Albion
was to get the ball to first base before the runner could get back
to the base for the third out. Final score: Evansville 6, Albion
7.
