EVANSVILLE JAYS RECORD FIRST LOSS OF THE 2006 SEASON

On Sunday, May 28th the Evansville Jays hosted the Albion Tigers in the Home Talent Baseball League game. Coming into the game the Jays were in first place of the Southeast Section at 3-0, and the Tigers were in second with a 2-1 record.

Evansville scored first in the bottom of the third inning with two outs Casey Nelson hit a single and was followed by a double by Jerod Steindl. With runners on third and second base a clutch 2-RBI base hit single by Tim Legler scored both runners. Evansville leads 2-0.

Albion tied the game in the top of the fourth inning with a couple of hits and an error by Evansville. Then in the top of the seventh inning Albion scored four runs on 4 hits. It was a tough inning for the Jays defense, committing 3 errors in the inning. Score Evansville 2, Albion 6.

In the bottom half of the seventh inning Evansville bounced back in a hurry. Brookes Baumberger and Jeremy Rasmussen each lead off the inning with a walk. Next batter, Nick Manion hit a single to score Baumberger. The key hit in the inning was when Brent Cashore ripped a 2-RBI double down the first base line to score Rasmussen and Manion. Next batter, Jon Frey took a couple of pitches, and Cashore was able to advance to third on a wild pitch. Frey was able to score Cashore with a ground out to the shortstop. Score Evansville 6, Albion 6.

Albion was able to score in the top of the ninth on 1 hit, 1 error and two walks. Their lead off batter reached on an error, which eventually scored on a bases loaded walk. Score Evansville 6, Albion 7.

Evansville's bottom half of the ninth inning was filled with a roller coaster of emotions. With one out Frey hit a base hit. Next batter Casey Nelson hit a deep shot to center field. When the ball was hit it looked as if it was going to be a home run to win or at least a double to tie the game, but Albion's center fielder made a great catch at the top of the fence to record the second out. When the catch was made Frey was just rounding second base. Albion was to get the ball to first base before the runner could get back to the base for the third out. Final score: Evansville 6, Albion 7.

Despite the loss it was an exciting game for the 60-75 fans that enjoyed the beautiful weather on Sunday. Evansville also played host to Deerfield on Memorial Day. That game story will be in next week's paper. This Thursday, June 1st Evansville plays Blanchardville at Lake Leota Park starting at 7:30 pm. TIGERS TAKE OVER FIRST PLACE

The Albion Tigers pulled into first place on Sunday with a thrilling 7-6 victory at previously unbeaten Evansville. The game ended in the bottom of the ninth when Albion centerfielder Jesse Appel caught a fly ball against the center field wall, then promptly fired to first base to double up the potential tying run. Appel also had a big day at the plate with three hits, while Jason Millar and Marty Johnson both had two-run doubles. Aaron Manogue pitched the final three innings in relief to earn the victory.
