EVANSVILLE JAYS LOSE ANOTHER
CLOSE GAME
On Sunday, June 4th the Evansville Jays traveled to Utica for a
Home Talent Baseball League game. For the second Sunday League game
in a row the Jays lose the game in the ninth inning. Last week Albion
scored the winning run in the top of the ninth. This week Utica
wins in the bottom of the ninth inning.
The game was a low scoring pitching duel. Evansville's starting
pitcher, Brent Cashore, struck out 5 and scattered 7 hits in six
innings of work. In the bottom of the third inning Cashore was able
to pitch out of a bases loaded jam by striking out a batter for
the third out. Evansville's relief pitcher, Ben Kraus, was excellent
by retiring the all six batters he faced with some help from a double
play and catcher, Jerod Steindl, throwing out a runner attempting
to seal second base.
Utica scored two runs in the fifth inning. They had runners on
second and third with one out when the next batter hit a line shot
to left field which just tipped off the glove of Evansville's diving
Evan Baumberger.
Evansville struggled to get runners in scoring position early.
Evansville's first runner to second base was Jason Schultz in the
fifth inning. Utica's defense was good and bad. They committed five
errors in the game, but were able get three double plays to stifle
the Jays offense at key moments in the game.
The Jays rallied in the top of the ninth inning to tie the game
at 2 apiece. Cashore lead off the inning with a double. Next batter
Jon Frey reached on an error by the shortstop while Cashore advanced
to third. Later Frey stole second base. Next batter Tim Legler scored
Cashore on a grounded out to second base. On the play, Utica's first
baseman tried to throw out Frey at third, but the throw was wide
and went out of play to score Frey.
Utica scored in the bottom of the ninth with a one out double and
two walk to the load the bases. The next batter hit a ground ball
to score the winning run from third.
Evansville's game on Memorial Day against Deerfield was rained
out. The make-up date is set for Saturday, June 17th at the Evansville
High School field starting at 1:00 pm. Of the 22 games in the HTL,
it was the only game rained out that day.
The Jays won their first Night League game last Thursday 11-6 against
Blanchardville at Leota Park.

starting at 7:30 pm. This Sunday, June 11th Evansville will travel
to Oregon for a 1:00 pm game. For the latest schedule and results
