EVANSVILLE JAYS OUT SLUGGED BY DEERFIELD

On Saturday, June 17th the Evansville Jays hosted Deerfield in a Home Talent Baseball League game. The game was played on Saturday as a make-up date when the originally scheduled game was rained out on Memorial Day.

Deerfield jumped to an early 3-0 lead when Steve Klawitter hit a solo home run in the top of the second inning and again hit a two-run shot in the third inning. The Jays were able to get a run on the board when Jason Schultz walked and advanced to third on a base hit by Brent Cashore. With runners on first and third Deerfield attempted to throw out the stealing Cashore at second base, but the ball sailed into center field to score Schultz. Score Evansville 1 Deerfield 3.

The Jays pulled within one run when Evan Baumberger hit single down the third base line. He then stole second base. With two outs Jerod Steindl hit in Baumberger with a line drive single. Score Evansville 2 Deerfield 3.

In the bottom of the eighth inning and the score Evansville 2 Deerfield 7, the Jays batted in two runs to pull with in three. Steindl lead off the inning with a walk, and was followed by Nick Manion's base hit. With one out Brookes Baumberger hit a RBI single to score Steindl and advanced Manion to third. The next batter, Ben Kraus, hit a fielder's choice ground ball to score Manion from third. Score Evansville 4 Deerfield 7.

Evansville was able to add a run in the bottom of the ninth when Schultz walked and was followed by a double from Cashore. Schultz scored all the way from first. The Jays last inning rally stalled, and the final score was Evansville 5 Deerfield 8.
