EVANSVILLE JAYS WIN

On Sunday, June 10 the Evansville Jays (0-5) Home Talent Baseball Team traveled to Stoughton to play the Merchants (2-3) in a Southeast Section Home Talent League Game. The Jays coming into the game were still looking for their first league win.

Stoughton scored first in the game. Their first run came in the bottom of the first inning when they hit back-to-back doubles and their second and last run came in the third inning that was started by a lead-off triple. Score Evansville 0, Stoughton 2.

During the top of the sixth inning the Jays scored 6 runs on only 3 hits and batted around in the inning. Josh Copeland led off the inning with a walk, next batter Jerry Woods hit into a typical 6-4-3 double play, but he hustled to beat the throw from second. Next batter, Jasen Koebler hit a base hit, then Jon Frey reached on a throwing error by Stoughton's third baseman; Woods scored on the wild throw with Koebler and Frey advancing to 3rd and 2nd. With one out, Jerod Steindl hit a 2-RBI base hit to score Koebler and Frey. Next batter, Brent Cashore, was hit by the pitch and then Brookes Baumberger reached on an error. With the bases loaded Nic Larson, hit a fielder's chose ground out (Baumberger at second) to score Steindl from third. With Cashore at third and Larson at first, Larson attempted a stretch seal and when the pitcher threw to second, Cashore broke for home and scored. The throw got past the catcher, so Larson advanced to third. Next batter Ryan Lindemann poked a base hit between the first and second basemen to score Larson. Score Evansville 6, Stoughton 2.

Evansville wasn't done with the score just yet. In the top of the eighth inning with one out, Koebler drew a walk, and was followed by a base hit by Frey. A couple of batters later and now with 2 outs, Cashore put the ball in play. Stoughton's throw got past the first baseman to score Koebler with Frey and Cashore advancing to 3rd and 2nd. Next batter, Baumberger hit a 2 strike base hit to score Frey and Cashore. Final score Evansville 9, Stoughton 2.

Starting pitcher, Nic Larson pitched great only allowing the earn run in the first and pitched out of a jam in the third after giving up the lead-off triple. Relief pitcher Brent Cashore came in to shut the door on the Merchants hope for a comeback.

Evansville's defense was able to bend, but didn't break when needed. The Jays turned two double plays. Catcher Jerod Steindl recorded 4 putouts on the day. He caught 3 tough pop ups behind home plate and threw out a runner attempting to seal second base.

On Thursday, June 7th the Jays traveled to the Monroe, despite the severe weather threat, to play the Monroe Brewers. The Brewers beat the Jays, 12-3 in 5 innings. The game was called because of the clay base pitch's mound and batter's boxes were unplayable due to the on and off rain during the game.
