EVANSVILLE JAYS DROP HTL SEASON HOME OPENER

On Sunday, May 18th the Evansville Jays hosted Albion in a Home Talent Baseball League Home Opener game. The 2008 season marks the 80th season of the Home Talent League, but only the 4th season for Evansville in the modern era. Prior to 2005, Evansville did not have a team in town since the early 1980s.

Since the start of the New Year the players on the Jays have been working hard to hone their skills for the upcoming season. On Sundays in January, February and March the players had indoor practices at the High School open gyms to play catch and hit in the batting cage. Starting in April the team moved practice outside. Along with moving practice outside, the Jays played a total of 7 scrimmage games in April and May to see live pitching and practice real game situations. Unfortunately for the Jays on Sunday, Albion came ready to play as well.

The first four innings was a bit rocky for the Jays by committing 6 of their 8 errors and allowing Albion to score six runs. Evansville had a tough day on defense.

Evansville scored two runs in their bottom half of inning number five when Nic Larson and Jeremy Rasmussen hit back to back singles, and then two batters later Jake Bronkema hit a double to clear the bases.

Evansville scored their final two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning when Crag Paton walked and was followed by a triple by Jake Bronkema. Jake also scored on the play when the throw to third got pass the third baseman.

Last Thursday on May 15 the Jays traveled to Monona to play the defending league champions in a Thursday Night League Season Opener. The Jays had solid game all around to win the game 8 to 1. This Thursday, Evansville has a bye week, but will return to Night League play on Thursday, May 29 against Verona at Leota Park starting at 7:30 pm.

On Sunday, May 25th Evansville with travel to Stoughton. This year Stoughton's team is set to improve as they have picked up some of the top players from Oregon's Home Talent team because Oregon does not have a team this year. Also, Stoughton added a top pitcher who used to play for Wiota Home Talent.

On Memorial Day Evansville will host Deerfield for a 1:00 pm game at the high school's Stan Sperry Field. There will be a DJ announcing the game and color guard will be provided by local area Veterans. Also, courtesy of Evansville's Andrew Peart Agency, free hot dogs and soda will be available for the first 500 fans, and while at the game sign up for a free raffle to win Brewers tickets. For the latest schedule and results please visit the team's website at www.evansville.hometalent.org.

This week the Evansville Home Talent Team would like to recognize their Gold Sponsors: Allen Realty, Allen Custom Flatwork and Evansville Oil Pros. Next week the Silver sponsors will be listed. A complete list of sponsors is listed on the team's website.
