EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT BASEBALL
WINS FIVE STRAIGHT
On Sunday, June 22nd Evansville Jays hosted Utica Association in
a Southeast Section Home Talent baseball game at the high school's
Stan Sperry Field. Evansville continued their winning ways by beating
Utica 5 to 3 to extend their current Sunday League winning streak
to 5 games. Evansville is now in first place of the Southeast Section
West Division with a record of 5 wins and 1 loss. Stoughton currently
has the same record as Evansville, but the Jays beat Stoughton 5-4
in 10 innings back on Sunday, May 25. With 5 wins already in 2008,
the Jays have surpassed their previous record for wins in a season
of 4 (2006 & 2007).
The Jays scored first in the bottom of the third inning when Jerod
Steindl singled; two outs later Jeremy Rasmussen walked, then Nick
Manion reached on an error. Next batter, Brent Cashore, for the
second Sunday in a row with the bases loaded and two outs hit a
3 RBI double in the left field gap to clear the bases. Evansville
3 - 0. Later in the same inning Cashore stole third base and later
scored on a wild pitch. Evansville 4 - 0.
Evansville scored a run in the bottom of the 4th inning. Brent
Cashore reached on an error and later advanced to third base on
a base hit by Jake Bronkema. Later in the inning a pitch got away
from the Utica catcher, the catcher threw down to third base in
an attempt to throw out Cashore, but the ball got past the third
baseman to score Cashore. Evansville 5 - 0.
Utica made the game close in the 7th inning when they scored 3
runs on 3 singles and a double. Evansville's relief pitching by
Nic Larson and solid defense during the remainder of the game helped
preserve the win. Final score Evansville 5 Utica 3. Evansville's
current Sunday League record is 5 wins and 1 loss.
Evansville's starting pitcher, Matt Drefahl, once again did a great
job. He went 6 and 2/3 innings, striking out 8, walked 2 and scattered
6 hits. Many times Drefahl pitched his way out of jams by striking
out a batter for the third out of the inning when Utica was poised
to score. For example, in the first inning with Utica runners on
first and second, Drefahl struck out the last batter for the third
out of the inning. He did it again in the fifth inning with the
bases loaded.
Evansville continues their home stand on Thursday, June 26 when
they host DeForest for a 7:30 pm Night League game at Leota Park.
Sunday, June 29 Evansville (5-1) will play Lake Mills (3-3) at Warner
Park after the Mallards 3:05 pm game. This date is Evansville Community
Night at the Mallards, as Evansville residents receive discounted
tickets. To learn more about this game at the Mallards, visit the
team's website at www.evansville.hometalent.org.
This week the Evansville Home Talent Team would like to recognize

Evansville has stamped itself as a bona fide contender in the Southeast
Section of Home Talent League baseball.
The Jays used a big third inning Sunday to gain a 5-3 victory over
Utica, a perennial contender, and tie Stoughton for the West Division
lead at 5-1.
Albion got back to the .500 mark at 3-3 by rallying for a 7-4 win
at Orfordville. Jefferson (6-1) gained a two-game lead in the East
Division by routing Deerfield, 9-2, while Fort Atkinson edged Lake
Mills, 3-2 in 10 innings, and Cambridge slipped past Whitewater,
5-4.
- Evansville 5, Utica 3Brent Cashores three-run double
with two outs in the third powered host Evansville to its fifth
straight win.
Jerod Steindl started the four-run inning with a single. Jeremy
Ramussen walked, and Nick Manion reached on an error to load the
bases for the key blow by Cashore, who stole third and scored on
a wild pitch to give the Jays a 4-0 lead.
Cashore pushed the lead to 5-0 in the fifth after reaching on an
error and advancing to third on Jake Bronkemas single. The
run scored on an errant throw to third base.
Utica (3-2) bounced back with a three-run seventh inning that included
three singles and a double, but Evansville relief pitcher Nic Larson
was in control the rest of the way.
Evansville starter Matt Drefahl struck out eight, walked two and
scattered six hits in working 6 2/3 innings.
- Albion 7, Orfordville 4Jason Millars two-run single
with two outs in the eighth inning broke a 4-4 tie and carried the
Tigers to a come-from-behind victory.
It was Millars second run-scoring hit of the day. He also
had an RBI single in Albions three-run fourth inning, which
cut into the 4-0 lead the Orioles had built in the first.
Albion catcher Matt Millar had three hits and scored three runs,
including the tying run the eighth, which set the stage for his
brothers clutch hit.
Mike Nanstad and Ben Everson kept Albion in contention with another
strong effort on the mound. Nanstad struck out six in six innings,
and Everson got the win by allowing only one base-runner and extending
his streak to 15 straight innings without allowing an earned run.
Ty Hansens RBI single and B.J. Cooks two-run double
sparked Orfordville (1-6) to its four-run inning.
- Jefferson 9, Deerfield 2Bill Baumann pitched a complete-game
eight-hitter in leading Jefferson past visiting Deerfield (1-7).
The Blue Devils made the most of Deerfields four errors in
a four-run fifth inning that made it 5-0.
- Fort Atkinson 3, Lake Mils 2Small ball in the bottom of
the 10th broke a 2-2 tie and gave Fort Atkinson a win that lifted
the Generals (4-3) into second place over the Grays (3-3) in the
East Division.
Brandon Krigbaum was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored the
winning run on Tom Dehnerts single.
Fort Atkinson grabbed a 2-0 lead on Dehnerts two-run single
in the fifth, but Lake Mills tied it in a two-run ninth.
- Cambridge 5, Whitewater 4Cambridge (2-4) rallied from a
4-2 deficit in a two-run eighth inning. Adrian Flores capped the
winners 10-hit attack by driving in the lead run.
