EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT BASEBALL
WINS AT WARNER PARK
On Sunday, June 29th Evansville Jays played Lake Mills Grays in
a Southeast Section Home Talent baseball game at Warner Park. Sunday
was Evansville Community Night at the Mallards. Evansville residents
received discounted Mallards tickets for the 3:05 pm Mallards game
with the Home Talent game to follow. Evansville took control of
the game early and never looked back to go on to win 9 to 0 to extend
their current Sunday League winning streak to 6 games.
Evansville is now in sole possession of first place of the Southeast
Section West Division with a record of 6 wins and 1 loss. Evansville
was previously tied with Stoughton, but Stoughton lost to Deerfield
5 to 4 on Sunday.
Evansville's starting pitcher, Matt Drefahl, had an outstanding
performance. He pitched a complete game 3-hit shut-out while striking
out 7 and only walking 3. Drefahl ended the game by catching a line
drive back at him and doubling off the runner on first. The other
Jays exciting double play worth mentioning was in the eighth inning.
With one out and a runner on first third baseman, Brent Cashore,
dove towards the line to catch a line drive, and then he quickly
got to his feet and threw across the diamond to double off the runner
at first. The Evansville crowd roared to their feet to cheer on
the "web gem" or "top play nominee" (ESPN lingo).
Evansville Jays scored first in the bottom of the second inning
when with one out Chad Rasmussen reached on an error, and then Derek
Cashore and Craig Paton each walked to load the bases. Now with
two out, Jeremy Rasmussen singled to score brother Chad. Next batter,
Nick Manion, walked to score Derek. Score Evansville 2 Lake Mills
0.
The Jays tacked on another run in the fourth inning when Derek
Cashore led off the inning with a base hit and stole second base.
Two batters later, Craig Paton walked. Next batter, Jeremy Rasmussen,
hit a base hit. Derek was unable to score from second on the hit,
but advanced to third in which he later scored on a sacrifice fly
by Nick Manion. Score Evansville 3 Lake Mills 0.
Evansville doubled their score in the fifth inning by adding 3
more runs. It started with one out when Jerod Steindl singled. Two
batters later and with two outs, Derek Cashore was hit by the pitch.
Steindl scored on a base hit by Jon Frey with Derek and Jon advancing
to third and second on the throw to home plate in an attempt to
throw out Steindl. Next batter, Craig Paton, hit a clutch 2-out
2-RBI base hit to score Derek and Jon. Score Evansville 6 Lake Mills
0.
Again the Jays added 3 more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
The Jays started the inning with 3 straight base hits by Nick Manion,
Brent Cashore and Jake Bronkema. Manion scored on Bronkema's single.
Brent scored on a pass ball by the catcher. Bronkema scored on a
sacrifice fly by Jerod Steindl. Final score Evansville 9 Lake Mills
0.
