EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT WINS AT FOURTH OF JULY FESTIVAL

On Tuesday, July 1st the Evansville Jays Home Talent Baseball Team (6-1) played at Whitewater (2-5) in a make up game that was rained out on June 8th. Evansville won 12 to 1 in a game shortened 7 innings due to the ten run rule. The Jays offense banged out 13 hits that included 5 extra base hits to extend their Sunday League winning streak to 7 games for a record of 7 wins and only 1 loss.

The key highlight from the game was Nick Manion hitting 3 doubles and going 4 for 5 in the game. The Jays had outstanding pitching from Nic Larson and Chad Rasmussen to combine for 5 strike outs, only 2 walks and scattering 8 hits in 7 innings.

On Friday, July 4th the Evansville Jays (7-1) hosted the Stoughton Merchants (5-2) at Lake Leota Park after the annual holiday parade. The game turned out to be a pitcher's duel between starters Matt Drefahl of Evansville and Ryan VonHaden of Stoughton.

Stoughton scored their only run in the 2nd inning. Evansville took the lead in the bottom of the 8th inning when Craig Paton led off the inning with a single, and then Jeremy Rasmussen sacrificed bunted Paton to second. Two batters later, Brent Cashore was hit by a pitch. Next batter, Jake Bronkema, hit a base hit to right field to score Paton from second, and on the play the ball got past the right fielder to allow Cashore to score all the way from first base.

Nic Larson, who relieved Drefahl in the 8th inning, performed well in relief. Larson hit the first batter in the top of the 9th inning, but was able to pick the runner off of first base. Larson was able to get the next two batters to pop out to win the game. Evansville extended their Sunday League winning streak to 8 games for a record of 7 wins and only 1 loss.

The Jays winning streak came to an end on Sunday, July 6, 2008 in Utica (6-2). Evansville was held to only 5 hits, while being struck out 12 times.

Evansville's only runs came in the 3rd inning when Craig Paton led off the inning with a walk and was followed by a base hit by Jeremy Rasmussen. Paton scored from 3rd base on a sacrifice fly by Nick Manion. Two batters later, Chad Rasmussen hit a double to the right center gap to score Brother Jeremy.

After Sunday, Evansville (8-2) is now only a half game ahead of Utica (7-2) for first place in the Southeast Section West Division.
