LARGE CROWD FOR EVANSVILLE HOME TALENT APPRECIATION DAY GAME; RASMUSSEN REPRESENTS EVANSVILLE AT HTL ALL-STAR GAME

On Sunday, July 13th, the Evansville Jays Home Talent Baseball Team (8-2) hosted the Orfordville Orioles (2-8) in a Southeast Section Home Talent League game. Sunday was Evansville's annual sponsor, fan and family Appreciation Day game, where the Jays provided steak sandwiches and other tasty treats for a free picnic after the game.

As for the game, the Orioles did not have enough players to start the game with nine players, so by rule Orfordville forfeited the game. Evansville now has a record of 9 wins and 2 losses. One of the Jays players played with Orfordville, so at least an expedition game could be played for the large crowd. A quick count and estimate of fans on hand to watch the game was around 100 people; with 75 or so enjoying the picnic afterwards.

Right after the Jays game on Sunday, Jeremy Rasmussen and family hustled up to Madison for the Northwoods League All-Star festivities hosted this year by the Madison Mallards at Warner Park. Jeremy represented Evansville to play in an All-Star Game between the US Military All-Stars and the Home Talent League All-Stars. It was a great event for the Home Talent League.

The Home Talent League All-Stars used a six pitcher mound staff to hold the Military All-Stars to two hits en-route to a 5-2 win at The Duck Pond Sunday night. Argyle's Ben Wallace pitched the first two innings, giving up one hit and striking out two. The batter who got the one hit was retired on a pick-off move. Ashton's Craig Meier, Utica's Matt Dwyer and Blanchardville's Josh Hathaway all worked scoreless innings.

The Military All-Stars got to McFarlands' Cory Schuchardt for two runs in the sixth on an error and an RBI single by second baseman Ray Judy. Poynette's Kory Ryan pitched a scoreless seventh.

Fort Atkinson shortstop Brandon Krigbaum singled with one out in the first, stole second, took third on a throwing error and scored on a single by Middleton centerfielder Josh Hinson for the first run for the HTL All-Stars. Black Earth designated hitter Paul Schlimgen walked to lead off the second and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

Waterloo outfielder Tyler Sellnow walked to open the third and Lake Mills shortstop PJ Stilling reached on an error to set up two more runs. Sellnow scored on a wild pitch and Stilling came home on a single by Middleton DH Tim Cleary.

The final run by the HTL stars came in the fourth. Black Earth outfielder Michael Brunner singled, and Marshall shortstop Todd Grossman plated him with another single.

The Military Stars are made up of active duty servicemen from the various branches of service. They "barnstorm" the country at their own expense and are subject to deployment at any time. All 42 HTL teams were invited to send a representative to the All-Star game.

On Thursday, July 17th Evansville will host Ashton for a 7:30 pm game time start at Leota Park. The game will be the Jays annual Youth Baseball Night where young Evansville baseball players and fans are welcomed to the park to get player autographs, play catch with the players, run the scoreboard, and grab free foul balls. There will be a DJ game announcer for the game. On Friday, July 18th Evansville (9-2) will travel to Jefferson (7-4) for a Sunday League make-up game starting at 8:00 pm. The originally scheduled game on May 11 against Jefferson was rained out. Evansville has bye week for Sunday, July 20th.
